RAVENNA — The Mason County Central Spartans took second place during the Lloyd Cogswell Memorial Invitational at Ravenna High School on Saturday, Dec. 3. The Montague Wildcats were tourney champions.
The Spartans were led by two champions. senior Landon Angst, 215 pounds, defeated J Boscma of Webberville in the finals with a first period fall.
“Landon wrestled really tough today,” said MCC Coach Kendel Trim. “He had three first period falls to really put a stamp on his performance.”
At 126 pounds, sophomore Wyatt Herwig added a second championship by defeating Kaydyn Betham of Lakeview in the finals, 5-1.
“Wyatt got his offense going today and looked good beating a quality opponent in the finals,” Trim said.
Also making the finals were junior Damien Gaitan, 120 pounds, and senior Parker Overmyer, 165 pounds. Both lost decisions to Montague’s Chayse Maddox and Micheal Jones, respectively.
“Both boys wrestled well and I believe can gain ground on their finals opponents,” Trim said. “We will see them again later in the year.”
Taking third place wins for the Spartans were senior David Gaitan, 144 pounds, and junior Emmanuel Yeck, 165 pounds. Junior William Thomsen, 150 pounds, and freshman Noah Williams, 106 pounds, both took fourth place wins.
“We had several other wrestlers win matches throughout the tournament which helped to get us to a second place finish,” Trim said. “This was a good tournament for us coming out of break and really let us know what we need to work on to improve going forward.”
MCC’s next match will be Wednesday at home.
