REED CITY — The Mason County Central Spartans lost to Beal City, 59-45, during a winter break tournament at Reed City High School Saturday, Jan. 2.
“A slow start and a hot-shooting first half by Beal City proved to be the difference, as they built a lead that was difficult to overcome,” said MCC Coach Chris VanderHaag. “They connected on six three-pointers in the opening quarter, setting the tone early. Despite the early deficit, my guys responded and played three solid quarters.”
Offensively, the scoring was balanced with contributions throughout the lineup, VanderHaag said.
Beal City was the fourth undefeated team the Spartans have played this season.
“My guys have been tested and we continue to learn and grow as a team,” he said.
Cole VanderHaag led the way with 18 points, along with three assists and five steals.
“He was heavily guarded tonight and had to really work for looks,” Coach VanderHaag said.
“Trent Hawke provided a strong presence inside, finishing with 12 points and eight rebounds. Caleb Bennetts added six points, three assists, and three steals.”
