SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central scored a win against the Holton Red Devils Thursday evening in West Michigan Conference Rivers Division play. The Spartans won 71-46.

“I was pleased with our team play tonight,” MCC Coach Chris VanderHaag said. “We got good, balanced scoring across the lineup. Our first half could have been better — we had a chance to separate in the first quarter, but they sped us up a little and were able to get back in it and tie the quarter.

“The second half really belonged to us. We outscored them 27–12 in the third quarter, and that stretch set the tone. It was a strong second-half team effort on both ends of the floor.

“I was happy with our aggressiveness and our attempts at the free-throw line. We’re getting the looks we want, and tonight they went in. The kids worked hard, competed, and our defense continues to get better.”

Cole VanderHaag led the way with 23 points, two steals and two assists.

“Trent Hawke was big for us with 15 points, 10 boards,” Coach VanderHaag said. “Grayden Etchison had a nice night with 13 points Michael Chye and Gannon Hansen were our defensive warriors tonight.   They played tremendous defense all game.  Michael had five steals and Gannon had nine rebounds.

The Spartans will play back to back winter break tournaments Jan. 2, 3 at Reed City High School and will return to regular season action at home against West Michigan Christian.

Scores by the quarters:

  • MCC: 17, 16, 27, 11 = 71
  • HHS: 14, 11, 12, 9 = 46
