SCOTTVILLE — The Manistee Mariners defeated the Mason County Central Spartans in the opening game of the season of boys varsity basketball 45-42.
“We came out with a strong first quarter,” said MCC coach Chris VanderHaag. “Ball movement and hitting the right shots was key. Our defense gave them some trouble to getting going.
We got a little comfortable coming out of the half and the third quarter was where we lost traction. Our defense was off and they made us pay. We put them at the line seven times that quarter and that was the real difference in the game. The free throw attempt count was 18/2 for Manistee.”
Cole VanderHaag led with scores for the Spartans with 14 points followed by Michael Chye with 10. Trent Hawk had five rebounds.
