SCOTTVILLE — The Mason County Central Spartan Mario Kart eSports team is ranked 12th in the state and will race against No. 21 Portland High School in the state playoffs on Thursday, Nov. 20. The Spartans were ranked as high as No. 3 earlier in the season. Despite losing the last two races of the regular season, the Spartans finished with an overall record of 5-3.
“We are the highest ranked team with a 5-3 record.” co-coach Tim Danielson said. “Even in our losses, we still scored a lot of match points. Teams are also ranked by their opponents winning percentage as well. Two of our losses came against the #5 and #6 teams. So our ‘strength of schedule’ worked in our favor.”
Danielson also reported that like a lot of teams, the MCC team had to work through some eligibility and overlapping student commitment issues this year but hopes to be at full strength for the playoffs.
The playoff field for Mario Kart in the Michigan High School Esports League (MHSEL) has the top 32 teams in the state. Following the first round playoff match for the Spartans on Thursday, a potential “Sweet 16” playoff match would be on Monday, November 24. From there, the remaining eight teams will compete live and in person at Michigan State University on Saturday, December 6.
