LUDINGTON — The Ludington High School Drama Club will present two one-act plays later this month. The plays include “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and “In the Forests of the Night” by Del Martin.
“I’ve never done one-acts at the high school before and really wanted to give the students an opportunity to experience a different genre of theatre,” said director Christine Plummer. “I’ve wanted to do ‘The Lottery’ for a long time and it seemed so timely even though it was published in 1948. Both plays deal with following rules and traditions based on fear and possible recrimination.
“The primary lesson that can be taken from ‘The Lottery’ is the danger of holding on to tradition or loyalty to a group at the cost of ethical and moral responsibility. All of the townspeople believe that killing someone every year is justified because that is the way things have always been done.”
Plummer said the main theme of the play ‘In the Forests of the Night’ is connection and the importance of human relationships, particularly in times of uncertainty and fear. The play explores how individuals rely on each other for support and how even seemingly small acts of connection can offer hope and strength.
The plays will be presented at L.F. Peterson Auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 13, Friday, Nov. 14, and Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. General admission is $5. The plays are recommended for ages 12 and older.
The company of actors play different roles in each one-act.
