PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — A traffic light is scheduled to be installed at the intersection of Jebavy Drive and Johnson Road in 2026. According to a press release from the Mason County Road Commission, the decision to install a light at that intersection is based ona traffic study which was conducted following the opening of Ludington Elementary School in January 2022.
Following the opening of the new school, a traffic light was installed at the intersection of Jebavy Drive and Bryant Road but the school traffic has resulted in increased delays for traffic at Jebavy Drive and Johnson Road.
“The study concluded that the levels of service at the intersection warranted a traffic signal,” the press release stated. “The study also recommended adding a dedicated right turn lane for southbound traffic at Jebavy Drive and Johnson Road.”
A dedicated right turn lane for southbound Jebavy Drive at Johnson Road was constructed in 2023 with a Michigan Department of Transportation grant and additional funding from the Mason County Road Commission.
The road commission then applied for an MDOT Safety Grant for a traffic signal at the intersection of Jebavy Drive and Johnson Road in May of 2023 for fiscal year 2025 but was unsuccessful.
The road commission applied again for the grant in May of 2024 for fiscal year 2026 and was awarded a grant in October of 2024 in the amount of $228,600.
The traffic signal work is anticipated in the summer/fall of 2026.
“This project will improve safety and greatly improve the levels of service of the motoring public for this intersection,” the press release stated.
