LUDINGTON — Fire severely damaged an apartment unit Tuesday afternoon at Pineway Apartments, 1111 E. Pineway Street, causing four people, including three children, to be transported to the hospital.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene at 12:25 p.m. Initial calls to Mason-Oceana 911 indicated that the rear portion of the building was on fire, according to Chief Chris Jones of Ludington Police Department.

“Upon arrival, responders observed a quad-style, single-story apartment building with visible flames and heavy smoke. Fire crews initiated an immediate suppression effort and successfully brought the fire under control within approximately 15 minutes,” Jones stated in a press release.

Life EMS was dispatched to provide medical treatment for one adult and three children. Dispatch information stated that they may have been suffering from smoke inhalation. The four were transported by ambulance to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital for evaluation.

One of the four apartment units sustained significant fire and smoke damage. The remaining three connected units experienced varying levels of smoke and water damage, Jones said. Residents of three of the four apartments were home when the fire started; occupants of the fourth unit were not home.

Emergency crews assisting on scene included Ludington Fire Department, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Ludington Police Department, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, and Life EMS.

All four units were tenant-occupied, with three apartments occupied at the time of the incident.

One adult and three children were transported to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital for evaluation.

The State Fire Marshal has been contacted and will assist with determining the cause and origin of the fire.

A Michigan State Police fire marshal has been dispatched to investigate.
