AMBER TOWNSHIP — Hiring a professional building contractor can be a tedious task. Unfortunately, many builders may perform quality work but may not excel in customer service. Christian Vogel, owner of Matthew 6 Construction, believes operating with high standards extends through all aspects of his business.
Vogel never saw himself as a person who would work for himself in the construction business.
“My intention was to work full time in mission work,” he said. “I had always felt called to being a missionary or a pastor.”
But, God had other plans, he said. “I just really felt like the Lord was calling me to serve people in construction.”
Vogel also experienced a life-threatening incident prior to starting his business. He had suffered a stroke.
“I couldn’t do anything for myself. I just trusted in God. I honestly do not think I would have gone into the construction business if I hadn’t had the stroke. The formation of this business was the result of much prayer.”
Vogel serves with humbleness, as the name of his business, from chapter 6 of the biblical “Book of Matthew:”
“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Vogel grew up in a family of men who worked in the trades. His father and uncles influenced him and taught him construction skills. Prior to starting the business he would often volunteer with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Love INC.
Customer service at Matthew 6 Construction is kept to a high standard.
“It’s fairly common for us to hear from customers and potential customers that we were the only builder to call them back,” Vogel said. “That’s a high priority for us. We may not be able to handle every job but we always call the customer back.”
Additionally, every job, no matter its size, is assigned a project manager.
“It’s important for the customer to know what’s going on with the job and for us to communicate with the customer. Having a project manager oversee the task builds trust and transparency.”
In 2023, Vogel moved the business into its current location at 2064 W. US 10-31 between Stiles and Quarterline roads.
“I believe having a brick and mortar business adds another layer of credibility,” Vogel said. “We always have someone in the office who is answering the phone.”
The business now has eight employees who work on a variety of construction projects from new builds to home improvement. The business’s primary market is Mason, Lake, Manistee, and Oceana counties but Vogel said he will take jobs in other locations as well.
