Oct. 11 bus tour will visit lighthouse, maritime museum tours

The carferry pilot house simulator is one of the most popular attractions at the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum.

The Mason County Historical Society and the Lakeshore Keepers are teaming up to bring a special bus tour of local historical maritime attractions. The Saturday, Oct. 11 tour will include a visit to Big Sable Point Lighthouse at the Ludington State Park and the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum in Ludington.

Guests will board shuttle buses from Ludington State Park for a three-hour, 40-minute adventure that combines history, stunning views, and immersive experiences.

Tour times are as follows:

  • 10 a.m. departure
  • 11:10 a.m. departure
  • 1:40 p.m. departure

During the tour, guests can climb the 112-foot tower of Big Sable Point Lighthouse for panoramic lake and dune views. They can also walk on the beach and shop for souvenirs at the gift shop. At the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum, guests will have the opportunity to explore interactive exhibits and authentic artifacts, including historic Fresnel lenses from Ludington’s lighthouses along with the most extensive history of the Ludington-based carferry fleet.

The tour cost is $50 per person, which includes bus transportation, entrance fees for the lighthouse and museum, a bottle of water, and a candy bar. The Mason County Historical Society is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1937. It operates the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum, Historic White Pine Village in Pere Marquette Township, and the Rose Hawley Archives in downtown Ludington.

The Lakeshore Keepers, formerly known as Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association, is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1987. It operates Big Sable Point Lighthouse at the Ludington State Park in Mason County, Ludington North Breakwater Lighthouse in Ludington, Little Sable Point Lighthouse in Silver Lake State Park in Oceana County, White River Light Station and Museum near Whitehall and Manistee North Pier Lighthouse.
