
David Boomgaard
David Christian Boomgaard, 88, of Irons, passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. Born on December 8, 1936, in Grand Rapids, he was a respected and beloved figure in his community and beyond. David graduated from Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School in 1953 and soon after served his country in the U.S. Navy, where he was stationed on the USS Hornet during the Korean War.
Following his military service, David dedicated 37 years to the U.S. Postal Service, where he retired as a post master. A sweet man, David was known for his kindness and generosity, he made a lasting impact on everyone he met. David’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, golfing, and traveling. He was an active member of Rotary International, Boy Scouts of America, and Big Brothers Big Sisters, where he contributed significantly to community service and leadership.
David is survived by his sons, John (Samantha) Boomgaard of Tulsa, Okla., James (Terri) Boomgaard of Branch, and Ed (Rom) Spyker of Custer; daughter, Tammy Sturgill of Ludington; and his longtime companion, Lois DeLong of Ludington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Bernice Boomgaard; brother, Phillip Boomgaard; sons, David Boomgaard Jr.; and son-in-law, Douglas Sturgill.
David’s life was marked by his unyielding dedication to his family, his service to his country, and his commitment to his community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Grace Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
