SHERMAN TOWNSHIP — The Mason County Sheriff’s Office has released additional details about the three-vehicle crash that killed two Bear Lake women and seriously injured three other people Friday, Oct. 23, at the intersection of US 31 and Sugar Grove Road.
According to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, preliminary findings indicate a 2014 Chrysler Town & Country minivan, driven by Sheila Fay Gruber, 69, of Bear Lake, was traveling west on Sugar Grove Road when it failed to stop at the stop sign at US 31.
The minivan entered the intersection and struck a northbound 2015 motorcycle. A southbound 2019 Ford F-350 pickup truck then struck the passenger side of the minivan.
Gruber and her passenger, her daughter, Meghan Rose Evans, 28, also of Bear Lake, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The motorcycle operator, Veronica Clawson, 57, of Goshen, Ind., was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered serious injuries.
The driver of the pickup truck, David Vanlopik, 67, of Schoolcraft, and his passenger, David Sytsma, 75, of Kalamazoo, also suffered serious injuries.
Emergency personnel were called to the crash at 4:46 p.m.
The crash remained under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.
Also responding to the scene were Mason County Rural Fire Authority units from Custer, Scottville and Fountain, Life EMS and the Mason County Victim Services Unit.
