SHERMAN TOWNSHIP — The Mason County Sheriff’s Office has identified the two victims who passed away following a three-vehicle crash Friday, Oct. 23, at the intersection of US 31 and Sugar Grove Road. Sheila Fay Gruber, 69, and Meghan Rose Evans, 28, both of Bear Lake, were pronounced dead at the scene. The two were mother and daughter.
According to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, emergency personnel were called to the crash at 4:46 p.m. The crash involved a 2015 motorcycle, a 2014 Chrysler Town & Country minivan and a 2019 Ford F-350 pickup truck.
Gruber was driving the minivan and Evans was her passenger. They were the only two occupants of the minivan. According to deputies, her vehicle was westbound on Sugar Grove Road and apparently failed to stop for the intersection at US 31.
Two other people were injured in the crash and transported to a Corewell Health Ludington Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The crash remained under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office. Cole said additional information about the cause of the crash would be released as the investigation continues.
Also responding to the scene were Mason County Rural Fire Authority units from Custer, Scottville and Fountain, Life EMS and the Mason County Victim Services Unit.
