Judge Nellis to discuss legal issues with Grandparents Raising Grandchildren group

Judge Jeff Nellis

SCOTTVILLE —  Mason County Probate Court Judge Jeffrey Nellis will discuss the legal aspects of raising young relatives during the monthly meeting of Mason County Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG) Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 5:30 p.m. at the Scottville Area Senior Center.

The program is open to any kinship caregiver raising a young relative, including grandparents and other family members. Those interested in attending are asked to call the senior center at 231-757-4705.

The meeting will begin with a meal for the entire family, followed by a discussion with Nellis for adults. Children will participate in separate, supervised activities, including decorating pumpkins and painting trick-or-treat bags for Halloween. The pumpkin decorating will not involve carving.

“We encourage anyone in Mason County who is raising a young relative to contact us for this meeting, whether or not they have participated in our program before,” said GRG coordinator Ellen Kerans. “In fact, this is the ideal meeting for new kinship caregivers to join our group. Judge Nellis will not only share important information about kinship caregiving, but will also answer questions from those attending.”

Kerans said advance registration is important to ensure enough food and activity supplies are available for everyone.

The group is also seeking additional families who could benefit from the program.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren meets on the third Wednesday of each month at the Scottville Area Senior Center, 140 S. Main St.

Funding for the program is provided by the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan, the Mason County senior millage and donations.
