Obituary: John Gilbert Coughlan, 77 of Ludington

John Gilbert Coughlan, 77 of Ludington, passed away in the comfort of his home on Thursday September 24, 2026.

Born on October 1, 1948, in Bayshore Long Island, New York, John was the son of Gilbert Weir and Gertrude Florence (Schehl) Coughlan. He graduated from Ludington High School with the class of 1969.

John worked at Great Lakes Castings for 29 years before retiring in 2000. He also worked at Walmart and Thompson Cabinet.

Known for his kind, loving, caring, and soft-spoken nature, John was a beloved member of the community and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

John cherished his time camping, bowling, bike riding, and spending time with his family. He was a regular at the Ludington Cafe’s retiree breakfast and took great joy in riding and watching the carferry.

He is survived by his sons, Brandon (Tiffany) Coughlan and Andrew (Ashley) Coughlan; daughter, Jamie (Jason) Lemmer; grandchildren, Nick and Jordan Coughlan, Maddison and Emery Coughlan, Anndrea and Landon Taylor, and Corey and Logan Lemmer; along with many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Florence Coughlan; maternal grandparents, John and Gertrude Schehl; paternal grandparents, James and Margaret Coughlan; and his first grandchild, Brandon Taylor.

A funeral service for John will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Grace Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. John will be laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Hospice of Michigan, Ludington Firefighters Association, and the National Kidney Association.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Jennie Nye and Katrina Genter from Hospice of Michigan for the care they had given John.
