PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — Historic White Pine Village will host a Michigan Logging Encampment from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3.
The event will feature lumbering and logging activities highlighting Michigan’s late 19th-century logging era.
Costumed educators from the Traveling Lumberjack and Logging Museum will demonstrate the tools and techniques used by lumbermen and share information about daily life and culture in Michigan logging camps during the late 1800s.
Activities will include sawmill demonstrations, log cookie stamping and the preparation of traditional lumberman meals. Visitors will also have an opportunity to learn about the equipment and skills used by workers during an era when lumbering was one of Michigan’s leading industries.
The program will recreate elements of a Michigan logging encampment and offer visitors a hands-on look at an industry that played a major role in the development of Mason County and communities throughout northern and west Michigan.
The event is part of programming at Historic White Pine Village, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Historic White Pine Village is owned and operated by the Mason County Historical Society, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1937.
