The Mason County District Library and the Scottville Area Senior Center are partnering to offer two opportunities to experience live birds of prey during educational programs on Wednesday, July 15.
The Outdoor Discovery Center of Holland will present “Birds of Prey” at 1 p.m. at the Mason County District Library’s Ludington branch, 217 E. Ludington Ave., followed by a second presentation at 3 p.m. at the Scottville Area Senior Center, 140 S. Main St., Scottville. Those who are unable to attend the Ludington program are encouraged to attend the Scottville presentation, and visitors are welcome to attend both programs.
The hour-long presentations will feature live raptors rescued by the Outdoor Discovery Center that have been certified as unable to survive in the wild. Depending on availability, visitors may see hawks, owls, falcons and possibly even an eagle while learning about the birds’ behavior, habitats and the important roles they play in Michigan’s ecosystems.
The Scottville presentation is part of the Senior Center’s Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program but is open to the public. Organizers ask guests attending the Scottville event to arrive by 2:45 p.m. so everyone is seated before the birds are brought into the room.
“We appreciate the partnership of the library in this excellent opportunity for both adults and kids,” said Ellen Kerans, coordinator of the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program. “Visitors will be requested to speak quietly and not make quick movements that might startle the birds.”
Emily Garland, head of youth services for the Mason County District Library, said the program offers a unique chance to see raptors up close in an indoor setting while learning from wildlife experts.
“This is a great chance to see these fascinating birds in an indoor setting and hear about them from the Discovery Center staff,” Garland said.
The Scottville Area Senior Center is located one-half block south of the U.S. 10 traffic signal in downtown Scottville. Parking and the entrance for the event are located on the west side of the building.
All Mason County District Library programs are free and open to the public.
