LUDINGTON — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is scheduled to begin maintenance dredging of Ludington Harbor on Thursday, July 9. The project is expected to continue through Aug. 17, weather permitting.
The annual dredging operation is intended to maintain safe navigational depths within the harbor and support commercial and recreational marine traffic. The work will take place from the harbor entrance between the north and south breakwater piers in Lake Michigan upstream to South Lakeshore Drive.
Material removed from the harbor bottom will be pumped through a submerged pipeline and discharged offshore beginning near Buttersville Campground and extending south in water depths of approximately 4 to 10 feet. The discharge area may vary in its distance from shore.
The submerged pipeline will be marked every 500 feet with orange buoys. Bright yellow illuminated pontoons will mark each end of the pipeline, though officials noted their appearance may vary depending on the time of day. Boaters are urged to navigate cautiously around dredging equipment and observe all posted maritime signals and temporary navigation aids.
