The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Mason County until 1 p.m. today as a strong storm moves across the area.
At 11:53 a.m., radar indicated a severe thunderstorm near Ludington moving east at 35 mph. The storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and penny-sized hail. Communities in the warning area include Ludington, Scottville, Fountain, Free Soil, Custer, Walhalla, Hamlin Lake, Bass Lake and Ludington State Park.
The National Weather Service said the storm could cause damage to roofs, siding and trees. Residents are urged to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and remain there until the storm passes. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also occurring with the storm. Officials remind the public that if thunder can be heard, they are close enough to be struck by lightning and should seek shelter immediately.
