PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — On Monday, Consumers Energy employees, most from the Ludington Pumped Storage Plant, spent part of the day volunteering at Historic White Pine Village, helping prepare the site for its 50th anniversary celebration, scheduled for July 3.

The 47 employees built a path up a hill to the chapel and constructed a new deck platform at the building’s entrance. They cut tree branches, cleared brush, repaired worn sidewalks, pressure-washed ramps and performed several other tasks.

“We have been wanting to do a community service project that would have an impact on our local community,” said Andrea Jendrusina, manager of the pumped storage plant. “Historic White Pine Village is just down the road from the plant, and it seemed like a great fit. Both our facilities have been around for about the same amount of time.”

Jendrusina said the initial plan was to send a small team to the village to help with a few projects. After meeting with Rebecca Berringer, executive director of the Mason County Historical Society, which owns and operates White Pine Village, they realized there was much more to do.

“This has just been incredible,” Berringer said. “What the employees of Consumers Energy have done here today would have required us to spend hundreds of hours with such a small staff.

“Naturally, it is always our intention to make Historic White Pine Village look its best, and we appreciate great neighbors like Consumers Energy.”

The Mason County Historical Society is a nonprofit charitable organization funded through donations, memberships, grants and museum admission fees.

On July 3, White Pine Village will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a daylong event. The village formally opened July 3, 1976.

The volunteer work performed by Consumers Energy employees would not have been completed in time for the celebration without their assistance, Berringer said.

“This has been the best day ever,” one of the Consumers Energy employees said. “This place is such a treasure.”
