Neta Jewett
Neta Jean Jewett, known affectionately to all as “Jean,” passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the age of 95. A resident of Ludington, Jean was born on Aug. 9, 1930, in Cheboygan. She was a remarkable woman who stood as a living testament to family history, being the last surviving child of the 18 children born to George and Hazel “Boone” Hansen. Jean carried the spirit of her large, vibrant upbringing throughout her entire life, meeting every day with a joyful heart and a deep, unwavering faith in the Lord.
Jean was a woman of the outdoors who found true contentment in the beauty of nature. Whether she was tending to her garden, hunting, fishing, or dancing the night away, she embraced life with an infectious energy. She was renowned for her cooking and her selfless nature, always looking for ways to help others. To Jean, a day spent having fun with friends or working with her hands was a day well-lived. Above all, her family was her greatest treasure.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bernard “Bernie” Jewett, and her son, Michael Jewett. Her legacy continues through her daughters, Carla Dotts of Ludington, and Deb Hittle, Cindy Shanklin, and Sam Jewett, all of Scottville.
The true lights of Jean’s life were her many grandchildren. She was the proud matriarch to 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Each visit from her grandchildren brightened her day immensely, and she cherished every moment spent watching her family tree grow and flourish. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and unconditional love, leaving behind memories that her descendants will carry in their hearts forever.
A celebration of Jean’s remarkable life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in her memory to the American Legion #76. As we say goodbye to a woman who gave so much of herself to the world, we take comfort in knowing she is at rest, likely dancing once again in the presence of her Creator. Her light remains in the blooming gardens and the laughter of the family she loved so dearly.
