LUDINGTON — The Ludington varsity softball team dropped a doubleheader to Muskegon Oakridge Tuesday night at Oriole Field, falling 13-6 and 21-10.
The Orioles were competitive throughout stretches of both games and held leads at different points during the night, but Oakridge capitalized with timely hitting and big innings to secure the sweep.
“We just weren’t very sharp tonight,” Ludington coach Sierra Holmes said. “We didn’t make enough plays. We were competitive and even in the lead several times over the course of the doubleheader, but we weren’t able to hold onto those leads. Oakridge’s hitters definitely challenged us, and they came up with several big hits with runners on base.”
In the opener, Madison VanSickle pitched a complete game for Ludington, allowing 17 hits and one walk while striking out three over seven innings.
Annika Heemstra led the Orioles offensively, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Madelyn Kenyon, Kaelyn Cole, Taylor King and VanSickle each added a hit. Kenyon also drove in two runs.
In game two, Heemstra started in the circle and pitched two-thirds of an inning before VanSickle entered in relief for two innings. Heemstra later re-entered to record the final out.
Heemstra allowed two hits, walked five batters, hit two and struck out one. VanSickle surrendered nine hits and four walks while recording three strikeouts.
At the plate, Heemstra, Charlie Morse and Eva Flores each collected a hit for Ludington. Kenyon’s lone hit was a triple, while Flores drove in three runs.
Ludington fell to 12-20 overall and 4-6 in the WMC Lakes Division with the losses.
