ONEKAMA — The Mason County Central baseball team split a nonleague doubleheader with Onekama on Thursday, dropping the opener 8-5 before bouncing back for a 14-7 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, Trent Hawke started on the mound for the Spartans and pitched 4 1/3 innings while striking out three batters.
Toby Reed paced the MCC offense, going 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Pierce Bladzik added a triple to center field and finished 1-for-2. Cayden Rummer, Nate Adams and Doug Soberalski each contributed hits for the Spartans.
MCC Coach Shaun Reed said defensive miscues proved costly.
“Ultimately, errors are what killed us,” Reed said. “If we figure out the error problem we will win games.”
The Spartans rebounded in the second game despite collecting only four hits in a 14-7 win.
Michael Chye earned the win on the mound with a strong outing, pitching four innings with four strikeouts while allowing one earned run.
Sawyer Sherretz, a junior varsity call-up, recorded his first varsity hit during the contest. Reed, Rummer and Hawke also had hits for MCC.
“We snapped our losing streak and we are looking to build some momentum heading into districts in two weeks,” Coach Reed said.
