FREMONT — The Ludington boys varsity golf team bounced back in a big way Thursday, claiming first place at the West Michigan Conference jamboree at Waters Edge Golf Course in Fremont one day after a disappointing runner-up finish at the Oakridge Invitational.

The Orioles posted a team score of 157, narrowly edging host Fremont, which finished with a 159. Manistee placed third with a 164, followed by Montague at 171, Oakridge at 179 and Whitehall at 188.

“A pretty disappointing second-place finish yesterday” helped fuel the team’s effort Thursday, according to coach Sebastian Alvarado, as Ludington quickly returned to form in conference play.

Alec Rodenbeck led the Orioles with a 1-over-par 36, earning a share of medalist honors with Fremont’s Sam Content.

Andrew Bousson and Channing Miller each carded 40s to finish tied for sixth place alongside Oakridge’s Isaac Utzinger and Montague’s Michael Flanagan.

Finn Flanery added a 41 to place 10th overall, while Keagan Curtis continued his strong varsity start with a 42. Nate Traeger rounded out Ludington’s scoring with a 43.

Ludington returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Katke Classic hosted by Big Rapids. The event will feature one of the strongest fields the Orioles will face this season.

Katke Golf Course hosts the Division 1 state finals and also will serve as the site for Ludington’s regional tournament on May 26, giving the Orioles an opportunity to compete against several Division 1 programs and fellow Region 7 schools ahead of postseason play.

Following the weekend tournament, Ludington will host its own invitational Monday morning at Lincoln Hills Golf Club.
