MUSKEGON — The Ludington High School boys varsity golf team turned in its best performance of the season Thursday, carding a 308 to place second at the Rocket Invite hosted by Reeths-Puffer at Lincoln Golf Club.
Ludington finished just two strokes behind champion Mona Shores, which won the event with a 306 in a strong tournament field.
Alec Rodenbeck and Asher Forfinski led the Orioles with matching rounds of 75, tying for third place overall in the individual standings. Finn Flanery followed with a 78, while Channing Miller shot 80 and Andrew Bousson added an 84 after recovering from a slow start.
Mona Shores golfer Ryder Swanson earned medalist honors with a 73, defeating Mattawan’s Griffin McClish in a playoff.
Ludington coach Sebastian Alvarado said the round reflected the progress the Orioles have been making throughout the season.
“It was a lot of fun to see the guys start trusting themselves and the work we’ve done to improve,” Alvarado said. “It is always cool to watch the lightbulb moment when things start to click.”
The Orioles caught fire late in the round, piling up six birdies in roughly a 10-minute span over the final holes.
Forfinski birdied No. 8 before holing a lengthy birdie effort on No. 9. Bousson drained a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 6, Rodenbeck connected on a 10-footer on No. 9 and Miller added another birdie putt on No. 5. During the surge, Flanery steadied the lineup by recording five consecutive pars.
“It was a lot of fun out there today,” Alvarado said.
