LUDINGTON — Mason County voters approved West Shore Community College’s 10-year capital improvement millage renewal proposal Tuesday, according to unofficial election results. However, the fate of the election is pending since Manistee County results have not yet been released.
In Mason County, the proposal passed by a vote of 2,246 to 1,686, or about 57 percent to 43 percent.
The proposal sought renewal of the college’s 0.9604-mill capital millage through 2035. College officials had said the millage was a continuation of a funding mechanism first approved in 1996 and last renewed by voters in 2015. The millage was expected to generate about $4.1 million annually for capital improvements, facility maintenance and instructional equipment.
Initial projects identified by the college included expansion of the AgScience Lab in partnership with West Shore Educational Service District and Michigan State University, renovation of student services areas and replacement of the technical center roof.
The West Shore Community College district includes Mason and Manistee counties along with portions of Lake, Oceana and Newaygo counties. Unofficial results from those counties had not yet been fully reported Tuesday evening.
