100,000 Chinook salmon fingerlings released into Big Sable River

HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — On Thursday, 100,000 Chinook (king) salmon fingerlings were released into the Big Sable River at Ludington State Park.

The fingerlings later made their way into Lake Michigan. The annual release is a joint effort between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Ludington Charter Boat Association.

The fish spent three weeks in net pens upstream in an effort to imprint the scent of the river on them.

The goal is that as they age and prepare to spawn, many of the fish will return to the Big Sable River, believing it to be their origin, and return to the Ludington area and surrounding waters to enhance local fishing.
