YPSILANTI — Three members of the Mason County Central High School forensics team traded prom for competition and returned home with strong finishes at a tournament held last weekend at Eastern Michigan University.

Richard Bowen led the team with a second-place finish in Oratory Open. Darnel Hunter placed fourth in Poetry, while Caleb Failor took 11th in Oratory 9/10.

Coaches Nick McKenney, Karen McKenney and Josh Gordon served as judges at the event. College assistants Jacob Failor, Helena Snell and Riley Moritz, serving as “Tab Jr.” officials, also played key roles in supporting the team.

“We are proud of all of our students and their hard work,” said Katarina Moore.

The team’s next competition will be the Michigan Speech Coaches Inc. Spring Conference Tournament, scheduled for May 15-17, 2026.
