HART — The Mason County Central Spartans faced off against the Hart Pirates in a two-game West Michigan Conference Rivers Division series Tuesday, dropping both contests in hard-fought battles.
“They are getting better each game,” coach Denise Cory said.
In the first game, an 11-1 loss, Payton Cory pitched five innings for the Spartans and struck out three. Aubrey Chye went 2-for-2 at the plate, while Ellen Norman also recorded a hit. Jordyn Melvin laid down a sacrifice bunt that resulted in an RBI.
Cory returned to the mound in the second game, pitching the first two innings before being relieved by Chye, who pitched the remainder of the game and struck out five.
Chye and Norman each recorded a hit again, with Chye also stealing a base. Chye, Cory, Avery Miller, Andrea Lopez and Lacie Salander each drew a walk.
The Spartans lost the second game 4-3 but showed improvement.
“I’m proud of how we played in game two,” Cory said.
