WSCC News is a presentation of West Shore Community College in partnership with Mason County Press.
LUDINGTON — West Shore Community College’s Humankind series will present a lecture titled “If the Declaration of Independence Could Talk, What Story Would It Tell?” Thursday, April 9 at 7 p.m. at the Mason County Historical Society’s Rose Hawley Archives, 130 E. Ludington Ave.
The presentation will be led by Mike Nagle, WSCC professor of history and political science, and will examine the enduring legacy of the Declaration of Independence and the evolving story it tells about the American experience. Adopted in July 1776, the document serves as a foundational narrative that both unites citizens and reflects the nation’s ongoing pursuit of freedom and equality.
Nagle will explore whether the Declaration would have considered itself revolutionary at the time of its adoption nearly 250 years ago, and how its ideals of liberty and justice have influenced the course of American history. The program invites attendees to reflect on the progress of the American democratic experiment and consider how its founding principles continue to shape the present.
The event is part of West Shore Community College’s Humankind series, which brings together community members, scholars and speakers to explore ideas that foster connection, understanding and dialogue. The 2026 series centers on the theme of storytelling, highlighting the role of narrative in shaping identity, culture and community.
The event is free and open to the public.
