Former law enforcement officer builds successful insulation business in Irons

IRONS — After 18 years in law enforcement, John Bennett took a leap of faith and stepped into a completely different career field.

Along with a silent business partner, Bennett founded Fresh Coast Foam, LLC, a company specializing in spray foam insulation and concrete lifting services throughout west Michigan.

“I had zero experience in this type of service and spent a lot of time learning it,” Bennett, who is a former Lake County sheriff’s deputy, said. “That was seven years ago and now we have become the premiere spray insulation service in the region.”

Fresh Coast Foam is based in Irons and serves residential, commercial and agricultural customers, offering solutions designed to improve energy efficiency, comfort and structural stability.

The company’s primary service is spray foam insulation, which expands to seal gaps, cracks and hard-to-reach areas in homes and buildings. The insulation creates an airtight barrier that helps reduce energy costs, control moisture and improve indoor comfort.

Applications include attics, basements, crawl spaces, rim joists, pole barns and new construction projects.

In addition to spray foam insulation, Fresh Coast Foam also provides concrete leveling and lifting using polyurethane foam injection. The process allows sunken driveways, sidewalks and patios to be raised and stabilized, often with minimal disruption and same-day use.

The company also offers other insulation options, including fiberglass, loose-fill and rigid foam, allowing customers to choose the best solution for their specific needs.

Fresh Coast Foam currently employs three full-time technicians along with part-time personnel. Bennett said building a knowledgeable team has been key to the company’s growth and reputation.

“We’ve worked hard to learn the industry and provide quality service,” he said.

Bennett’s transition from law enforcement to business owner reflects a growing trend of skilled trades and service-based industries expanding across rural communities such as those in Mason, Lake, Manistee and Oceana counties.

As energy costs continue to rise and homeowners look for ways to improve efficiency, services like spray foam insulation have become increasingly popular.
