Senior organizations in Mason County are receiving a boost in funding aimed at reducing loneliness and improving quality of life for older adults.
Molina Healthcare of Michigan, in collaboration with The MolinaCares Accord, recently announced $22,000 in grants to local senior-focused organizations, including the Scottville Area Senior Center and Ludington Senior Center. The Crawford County Commission on Aging also received funding as part of the regional effort.
The local grants are part of a larger $135,000 statewide initiative distributed through the Michigan Association of Senior Centers to 21 member organizations serving older adults. Funding will support programs such as dementia care, digital literacy, arts activities and transportation services designed to keep seniors engaged and connected.
In Mason County, the Scottville Area Senior Center will use its grant to expand homemaker services and other programs. The service includes visits to clients’ homes twice a month, where workers assist with household tasks while also providing social interaction and wellness checks.
The Ludington Senior Center plans to use its funding to offer monthly classes and forums focused on helping seniors better understand available services, health care changes, lifestyle topics and communication tools.
“We’re excited to connect seniors in our community with the opportunity to learn about services, lifestyle, changes in health care, and navigate the various systems and programming,” said Andrea Morrell, director of the Ludington Senior Center. “We’re looking forward to providing a class once a month for seniors to participate in and to keep seniors informed and updated.”
The Crawford County Commission on Aging will use its funding to develop a caregiver support program, including a virtual senior center to expand access for those unable to attend in person. The grant will also support events such as a caregiver conference, a Medicare and Medicaid coordination conference, and a health fair aimed at reducing caregiver burnout.
“This program will allow the Crawford County Commission on Aging to extend engagement opportunities to a broader population that has previously been unreachable,” said Tammy Findlay of the agency. “This MolinaCares grant helps continue to provide the services our seniors deserve.”
Health experts say social isolation is a significant factor in senior health, linked to increased risks of heart disease, stroke, dementia and premature death. Studies cited by the U.S. Surgeon General indicate loneliness can increase the risk of premature death by more than 60%.
“Good physical and mental health are critical to aging with dignity, and these MolinaCares grants support programming that addresses existing wellness gaps,” said Terrisca Des Jardins, plan president of Molina Healthcare of Michigan. “Our senior population continues to grow, and we are pleased to help bring these initiatives that can be scaled to meet the needs of this population.”
Molina Healthcare of Michigan provides government-funded health care services through Medicaid, Medicare and Marketplace programs, while The MolinaCares Accord focuses on funding community-based initiatives that improve health and well-being.
