James F. Hartman

James F. Hartman, 79, of Scottville, formerly of Hillsdale, died Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

James, known as Jim or Jimmy, was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., the son of the late James Richard and Maxine Anna (Knuth) Hartman. He graduated from Jonesville High School in 1965.

On Jan. 8, 1966, he married Carol Ann Dryer. They shared 60 years together.

Jim was known for his outgoing personality and generosity. He was a master electrician and worked for Metrix, Kerr Manufacturing and Hillsdale Tool before retiring in 2007. Following retirement, he served as an association secretary for the West Michigan USBC. He also coached bowling and drove a bus for Mason County Central School District.

He enjoyed bowling, fast-pitch softball in his younger years, woodworking, fishing and golf. His family remembers him for his ability to “jimmy-rig” just about anything.

Jim is survived by his wife, Carol Hartman; three daughters, Pamela (Paul) Avery of Racine, Wis., Kimberly (Chris Hutchings) Basler of Scottville, and Jamie (John) Smith of South Boardman; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; siblings, David (MaryLou) Hartman and Debra (Dan) Kyser; brothers-in-law, William Dryer and David (Rosemary) Dryer; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his parents-in-law, Donald and Doris Dryer.

In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held at this time. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
