LANSING — Steelhead fishing is picking up across rivers in West Michigan as anglers take advantage of improving spring conditions, according to the latest weekly fishing report from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Recent warmer temperatures and increased river flows have improved steelhead activity in several rivers, including those flowing into Lake Michigan. Anglers have reported success using spawn, beads and flies in deeper runs and near structure.
On the Pere Marquette River, steelhead fishing has been productive, with anglers finding fish in slower-moving water as conditions fluctuate. Similar reports have come from the Manistee and Muskegon rivers, where fishing pressure has increased with improving weather.
In addition to steelhead, some anglers have reported catching brown trout in inland streams, though success has varied depending on water clarity and temperature.
Ice conditions across the state continue to deteriorate, and the DNR is urging anglers to use extreme caution or avoid ice altogether as spring progresses.
On inland lakes, open water is beginning to appear, limiting ice fishing opportunities. Anglers are transitioning to river and shoreline fishing as conditions allow.
The DNR reminds anglers to check current fishing regulations and conditions before heading out and to always prioritize safety on the water.
The weekly fishing report is compiled using information from DNR staff and reports from anglers and bait shops across the state.

Regional reports
Upper Peninsula:
Ice conditions remain inconsistent, with many areas no longer safe for travel. Anglers are beginning to target rivers and open water. Steelhead fishing has been reported in tributaries of Lake Superior, including the St. Marys River and nearby streams, though success varies with water levels and clarity.
Northern Lower Peninsula:
Steelhead fishing continues to improve on rivers such as the Manistee, Pere Marquette and Au Sable. Anglers are finding fish in deeper holes and runs, with spawn and flies producing the best results. On inland lakes, ice is rapidly deteriorating, and most anglers have shifted to river systems.
Southwest Lower Peninsula:
Rivers including the Muskegon, Grand and St. Joseph are seeing increased steelhead activity. Anglers report success in deeper water and near structure, particularly following recent rain events that have raised water levels. Boat and shore fishing opportunities are increasing as access improves.
Southeast Lower Peninsula:
The Detroit River and Lake St. Clair are beginning to see more open water, with anglers targeting walleye and perch where conditions allow. Inland lakes are largely unsafe for ice fishing. River fishing is becoming more productive as temperatures rise.
The DNR continues to encourage anglers to monitor local conditions closely as weather patterns change rapidly this time of year.
