SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central School District has been named one of 12 recipients of a 2026 Education Excellence Award, receiving a $2,500 grant for the MCC Immersion Room.
Each year, the School Employers Trust–Schools Excess Liability Fund Foundation (SET SEG Foundation) hosts the Education Excellence Awards in partnership with the Michigan Association of School Boards, providing funding to public school programs aimed at enhancing student learning and future opportunities. In addition to the grant, recipients receive an “Education Excellence Winner” road sign and a commemorative trophy to display in their communities.
The foundation increased the number of awards this year to 12, up from 10 in previous years, citing support from donors.
The Immersion Room is a state-of-the-art learning space designed to provide K-12 students with interactive educational experiences. The room uses high-resolution video projection on three walls and the floor, along with surround sound and interactive elements, to create a virtual learning 180-degree environment. MCC was one of the first school districts in the country to develop an immersion room.
Students can explore a variety of subjects through the technology, including science, history and art. Examples include exploring the surface of the moon, walking through ancient Egypt and interacting with famous works of art.
“Opportunities for hands-on learning allow students to take their lessons and apply them to real-life experiences,” said Molly Mellema, executive director of the SET SEG Foundation. “The Immersion Room is the creativity in education we are proud to recognize, and we are honored to support efforts to grow the program and create new experiences for students.”
The SET SEG Foundation is the philanthropic arm of SET SEG, a risk management organization that serves Michigan public schools. The foundation provides services, scholarships and grants to support enrichment opportunities that promote learning, leadership and civic responsibility.
