SCOTTVILLE — The 20th century brought major changes to education in the United States, and Mason County was no exception. At the beginning of the century, Mason County had 69 public school districts. By the late 1960s, that number had been reduced to four and eventually to three today.

On Thursday, March 19, Rob Alway will discuss the history of school consolidation in Mason County.

The monthly Mason County History Talk will be held at the Scottville Area Senior Center, 140 S. Main St., beginning at 10:45 a.m. The program is presented by the Mason County Historical Society, Mason County Press and the Scottville Area Senior Center.

Alway is editor-in-chief of Mason County Press and has been researching local history for more than 40 years. He is currently the treasurer of the Mason County Historical Society Board of Trustees.

Founded in 1937, the Mason County Historical Society is a charitable nonprofit organization that relies on memberships, admission fees and donations. It operates the Rose Hawley Archives, Historic White Pine Village, Port of Ludington Maritime Museum and the Mason County Emporium.

Mason County Press is an online news service established in 2012. It is based on a weekly newspaper of the same name that served the Scottville area from 1938 to 1976 and 1986-87.

The Scottville Area Senior Center was established in 1974 by Mason County Central School District, which continues to operate the center.
