LUDINGTON — A former Shelby High School teacher and varsity boys soccer coach has been charged in Mason County’s 79th District Court with a felony of second-degree criminal sexual conduct (CSC) stemming from a Nov. 7, 2021 incident, according to court records.

Jairo Humberto Coronado, 41, was sentenced to 30 days in jail and two years probation in Newaygo County’s 27th Circuit Court Oct. 28, 2024 for a felony conviction of using a computer to commit a crime. Coronado pleaded guilty to the charge Aug. 26, 2024, and one felony count of accosting a child for immoral purposes was dismissed.

Coronado was arrested in a sting operation involving a multi-jurisdictional task force including the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the Newaygo County case.

The investigation in his new case was handled by the Michigan State Police, court records state.

Coronado is scheduled to appear in Mason County’s 79th District Court for a preliminary exam April 1 at 1:30 p.m. His bail was set at $5,000/personal recognizance, and he was released.

Coronado resigned from his positions at Shelby Public Schools, previously said his attorney Andrew LaPres.

“It was a sting operation,” said LaPres of the previous Newaygo County case. “He was chatting with a person in a chat forum (on his phone) and driving at the same time. He knew the person was young, but he didn’t know they were 15 years old, which is what they portrayed themselves as. He thought the person was older than that, but he didn’t think they were 18 either. He believed they were the age of consent, but not an adult. That’s why he took the plea of using a computer to commit a crime, which is the cell phone network.”

It was never clear whether the person was portraying a male or female victim, said the attorney.
