32 participate in Try Hockey for Free event

March 10, 2026

VICTORY TOWNSHIP — Thirty-two young athletes took their first strides on the ice during the Try Hockey for Free event held Saturday, March 7 at West Shore Community Ice Arena on the campus of West Shore Community College.

The event welcomed 32 new skaters, including 15 girls, giving local youth the opportunity to experience hockey for the first time in a fun, supportive environment.

Participants received on-ice instruction from local coaches and volunteers who introduced them to the basics of skating, stick handling, and teamwork. For many of the children, it was their first time putting on hockey equipment and stepping onto the ice.

The event also served as an introduction to youth hockey opportunities through the West Shore Amateur Hockey Association, which operates the West Shore Wolves program. The association provides developmental, recreational, and competitive hockey opportunities for youth from across the Lakeshore region.

“We were thrilled to see so many kids out on the ice giving hockey a try,” Heather Tykoski, West Shore Amateur Hockey Association president said. “Having 32 first-time skaters participate — including 15 girls — shows the growing interest in the sport in our community. Events like this help introduce families to hockey and show them that there’s a place for everyone in the game.”

Following the on-ice session, many participants and their families stayed to watch the West Shore Wolves play, giving the new skaters a chance to see where their hockey journey could lead.

The Try Hockey for Free program is part of a nationwide initiative designed to introduce youth to the sport by removing barriers such as equipment and cost for first-time participants.
