Man suffers medical emergency while performing maintenance on tugboat

March 2, 2026

The ATB Undaunted/Pere Marquette moored at the Rieth-Riley Construction dock earlier this winter.

LUDINGTON — A maintenance worker suffered a medical emergency Monday morning while working on the articulated tug/barge Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41, which is docked at the Rieth-Riley Construction dock. Emergency personnel from Ludington Police Department, Ludington Fire Department, and Life EMS were dispatched to the dock at 11:27 a.m.

Upon arrival, responders determined that a third-party vendor was performing maintenance on the tugboat’s carbon dioxide fire suppression system when the system unexpectedly discharged, according to a press release from LPD. As a result, one of the vendor’s employees, a male, experienced a medical emergency.

Ludington Police Department would not release the man’s age or what city he is from.

“Staff members from the tugboat immediately rendered first aid and initiated potentially life-saving measures prior to the arrival of emergency personnel,” the release stated.

The patient was then transported by ambulance to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. “The individual’s current condition is not being released at this time,” the press release stated.

The incident is being investigated by Ludington Police Department and Interlake Logistics Solutions, which operates the tug/barge. The dock property is leased to Rieth-Riley Construction but owned by Interlake Port Services, Inc. The parent company of the tug/barge and the dock is Interlake Maritime Services, which also owns the SS Badger carferry.

The tug/barge has been laid up for the winter and is expected to begin service within the next week.
