SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central defeated Holton in the first round of Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 District 73 tournament. The Sparans won 74-29, eliminating the Red Devils.
“Tonight was a great team effort,” said MCC Coach Chris VanderHaag. “We got contributions from everyone in a lot of different ways.
“I wasn’t real pleased with our ball pressure in the first half. We were playing a little too relaxed. But we came out with a much better mindset defensively in the second half and made the adjustments we needed.
“Offensively, we were able to get what we wanted because of good ball movement and a willingness to make the extra pass. When we share the ball like that, we’re a tough team to guard.
“Michael Chye had a really big game for us. He knocked down some big threes early and converted a few layups that came from his scrappy defensive effort. He also finished with six rebounds. Pierce Bladzik connected on some nice buckets in the paint and gave us strong interior play.
“I was really pleased with how we finished the game tonight and the way the guys competed all the way through.”
The Spartans will take on Western Michigan Christian at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at MCC High School.
