Shepherd — Four Mason County Central wrestlers qualified for regionals following districts hosted by Shepherd High School Saturday. Those wrestlers include Wyatt Herwig, Landon Angst, Parker Overmyer and Dameon Gaitan.
- Sophomore Wyatt Herwig, 126 pounds (25-14), finished in second place in the district tournament. He qualified by defeating Aiden Schaner of Hart 9-3 in the semifinals. He would lose to Kole Thomas of Hart in the finals by technical fall.
- Senior Landon Angst, 215 (33-10), qualified by defeating David Salvatore of Alma by technical fall 21-1 in the blood round. He then defeated Sawyer Huckins of Shepherd by fall at 1:29 to finish in third place.
- Senior Parker Overmyer, 165 (27-10), qualified by defeating Christopher Spyker of Standish Sterling 3-0 in the blood round. He would finish fourth after losing to Gave Wolverton of Reed City in the final round.
- Junior Dameon Gaitan, 120, (29-13), qualified by defeating Bentley Longton of Bullock Creek in the blood round and then fell to Cesar Cadena in the final round to finish fourth.
“These guys all wrestled the best they have wrestled all year which is what you need to do to get out of this tournament,” said MCC Coach Kendel Trim. “Dameon beat Micheal Chavaria of Hart in the first round to set him up to qualify, a wrestler he had lost to twice before. Everybody else is still continuing to improve and we really just had a great day. I am very happy with how everybody wrestled.
The Spartan girls wrestlers are participating in districts today at Whitehall High School.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association boys regional tournament will be held next weekend at Boyne City High School.
