RAVENNA — The Mason County Central Spartans defeated West Michigan Conference Rivers Division opponent Ravenna Friday in a close game, 59-57.

“It was a well-played game by both teams tonight and an important one for us heading into district seeding,” said MCC Coach Chris VanderHaag. “We knew coming in that we had to win the rebounding and physicality battle — and we did. We out rebounded them 23-14 and got to the free throw line when we needed to.

“Our guys are playing their best team basketball right now. There are still a few things we need to clean up, but we’re in a good place at the right time of the season.”

Senior team leader Cole VanderHaag had a tremendous game, finishing with a game-high 24 points along with 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

“They threw multiple defenders at him all night, but he made the right reads — either finding open teammates or knocking down big shots,” Coach VanderHaag said.

“Junior captain Trent Hawke was a great one-two punch alongside Cole, finishing with 12 points and grabbing some key rebounds.

The difference-maker in the paint was Tyler Norton. He controlled the boards and brought toughness inside, finishing with a team-high 8 rebounds and 2 steals.

It was a great win for Spartan Basketball as we continue to build momentum heading into districts,” VanderHaag said.
