MCE students learn firearms safety

February 10, 2026

CUSTER — Mason County Eastern Elementary School third and fourth grade students received a lesson in safety on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026, when Karen Zimmerman presented the nationally recognized Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program.

The presentation was sponsored by the Fin and Feather Club of Mason County. Club representatives emphasized their belief that prevention-focused, age-appropriate programs like Eddie Eagle deliver messages that can truly save lives.

Developed by the National Rifle Association the Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program is a firearm accident prevention initiative created specifically for children in pre-K through fourth grade. Since its introduction in 1988, the program has reached more than 30 million children across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico through schools, community organizations, and law enforcement agencies.

At its core, the program teaches four  easy-to-remember steps children should follow if they ever encounter a firearm: Stop, don’t touch, run away, tell an adult.

The program does not teach firearm mechanics, handling, or advocacy. Instead, its sole focus is situational awareness and personal safety. The message is delivered through engaging animated videos, activity books, and stickers featuring Eddie Eagle and his Wing Team, making the lessons memorable and developmentally appropriate for young audiences.

All instructional materials are provided at no cost to the school, helping ensure the program remains accessible to communities of all sizes. A parent guide to gun safety is also available for families, reinforcing the same safety principles at home and extending the impact beyond the classroom.

Programs like Eddie Eagle are often made possible through Friends of NRA grants, allowing schools and organizations to host presentations at little or no cost.
