Jeff Mount, MCC superintendent
By Rob Alway, Editor-in-Chief
SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central Superintendent Jeff Mount announced tonight that he will be retiring. Mount made the announcement at the board of education meeting stating that he will be ending his 27 years of service to MCC effective June 30.
Mount was appointed superintendent in 2006. A native of Greenville, he began his teaching career at Ludington Area School District. In 1999 he was hired by MCC as a middle school assistant principal and then as middle school principal in 2001.
“It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to serve this district,” Mount stated. “Over the years, I have had the privilege of working alongside an extraordinary staff whose dedication, professionalism, and care for students have never wavered. The commitment you bring to our schools each day is nothing short of inspiring, and it has been a joy to witness the positive impact you make in the lives of our students.
“I am equally grateful for the support and leadership of our school board. I have been fortunate to work with board members who consistently put the needs of students first and who lead with integrity, collaboration, and a shared vision for excellence in education. Together, we have navigated challenges, celebrated successes, and always kept our focus where it belongs — on doing what is best for children.”
Mount was appointed superintendent soon after the 2006 bond had past, which built the MCC Upper Elementary along with the “D Hall” wing of MCC High School, which included the addition of a new competition gymansium. That bond also paid for several other school building improvements. Last year, MCC voters approved a 2.5 mill renewal of that 2006 bond, which will raise $23.3 million and help pay major upgrades to the high school, security and safety upgrades at all the Scottville campus bulidings, along with improved streets and several other projects.
Mount said though he is retiring, he would be willing to assist with helping with the bond projects.
“As I look back on my years in this district, I do so with deep pride and gratitude,” he said. “The relationships built, the progress achieved, and the memories made will remain with me always. I am confident that the district will continue to thrive because of the dedicated people who serve it so well.
“Thank you for the trust, support, and friendship you have shown me throughout my career. I will always be proud to say that I am a Spartan and a part of this remarkable school community.
“A special thank you to my wife and kids for their consistent support and understanding over the years that sometimes my responsibilities as the superintendent came before them.
“I have been truly blessed in both my personal and professional life.”
Mount is the sixth person since 1934 to serve as the superintendent of Scottville/Mason County Central.
Arnold O. Carlson was the first superintendent of the Mason County Central School District, beginning in that role in 1955. However, Carlson began his work for Scottville School (Amber Township District No. 6) in 1927 when he was hired as principal and then in 1934 when he was promoted to superintendent. Carlson retired in 1967, serving the Scottville/MCC districts for 40 years total, 33 as superintendent.
Richard Weaver was hired as the second superintendent of MCC and served for 19 years, retiring in 1987. He was succeeded by Robert Redmond who served until 1992.
Bruce Smith served as MCC High School principal from 1978 to 1992 and then served as superintendent from 1992 to 1999.
Chuck Sandro served as superintendent from 1999 to 2006.
