CHEBOYGAN — Sub-zero temperatures didn’t stop the Lakeshore Badgers hockey team from heading north this weekend. The Lakeshore Badgers took on the Cheboygan Chiefs Saturday, winning 7-4. \
The game was fairly even through the first period with the Badgers taking a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
The teams again traded goals in the second period, with the Badgers adding 3 to Cheboygan’s 2, taking the teams to the second intermission with the Badgers leading 5-3. The third period saw the Badgers add 2 more goals to Cheboygan’s lone goal in the period.
“This was a rough contest with several penalties,” said Badgers Coach Brian Zatloukal. “We were perfect, killing off all five power play chances against us.”
On the other side of the special teams ledger, the Badgers had good success, scoring 3 power play goals in the game.
“We spent much of the game looking to take advantage of Cheboygan’s mistakes,” Zatloukal said. “We didn’t win as many board battles in this game as we expect to which led to Cheboygan’s chances.”
Goalie Brockton Jabrocki of Mason County Central took the win in goal, stopping 21 of the 25 shots he faced.
The Badgers got goals from MCC senior Levi Young (2 goals), MCC senior Lukas Schade, Ludington High School junior Ryan Higley (2 goals), MCC junior Cyric Jabrocki and LHS freshman Bradey Lawler (first high school goal).
The Badgers have three road games next week, playing at Grand Haven Wednesday night, at Gladwin Friday night and at Manistique on Saturday night.
The Lakeshore Badgers is a cooperative team hosted by Manistee Area Public Schools and consisting of high school players from MAPS, Ludington, Mason County Central, Mason County Eastern, Pentwater, Shelby and Hart.
