MASON COUNTY — A winter storm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for several west Michigan counties, including Mason and Oceana counties, beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, through 7 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20.
“Heavy snow and blowing snow are expected,” states NWS. “Near blizzard conditions are possible.” Total snow accumulation between 5 and 8 inches is expected with winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
“Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Wind chills below zero degrees on Monday could lead to frostbite within 30 minutes.
“If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution. Consider taking a winter storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing. Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded.”
