PINE RIVER — Mason County Central finished fourth place at the Pine River Fallen Bucks invitational on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026.

“We started with wins over Coopersville 52-30 and Benzie Central 42-38,” said MCC Coach Kendel Trim.  “In the pool finals we fell to Central Montcalm 60-21.  In the crossover matches we lost to LeRoy Pine River (#6 D4) 63 – 16.  Pine River would go on to defeat Central Montcalm in the finals.

“In the final match of the day we lost to Montague 48 – 37.  We wrestled well as a team today.  We did a better job at wrestling for team points and put together some good wins today even though we were a little banged up and were missing several weights due to injuries.  This brings our dual meet record to 8-6.”

Going undefeated on the day for the Spartans was 113-pound junior Dameon Gaitan.

“Dameon has really been improving and had a great showing today,” Trim said. “He showed a lot of heart in his match against the wrestler from Central Montcalm.  It was a close and hard fought match and he pulled away in the third period.  That is the toughness that we want to see out of our wrestlers.”

Going 4-1 on the day were freshman Noah Williams, 106 pounds, and Sophomore Desmond Thomas, 175 /190.

“During Noah’s run today he was able to beat John Ross of Coopersville by major decision 15-5,” Trim said. “He lost to Ross just last week.  He has been improving every time he steps on the mat.  Thomas has also shown great improvement.  He really looked like a different wrestler today compared to just last week.”

Sophomore Parker Overmyer went 3-1 on the day at 165 and junior William Wright went 3-2 at 157.

“Both are also looking better as the year goes on,” Trim said.

In the girls competition Abby Willoughby went 2-0.

“She looked tough and was really excited to pull off a couple of big wins,” Trim said.

MCC’s next meet is Wednesday in Hesperia against Orchard View and Manistee.
