Laura Stubbs
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mum, Laura Lillian (Jones) Stubbs. Laura passed away peacefully at Oakview Medical Care Facility on Monday, December 8, 2025. She was 87 years old.
Laura was born May 5, 1938, to Thomas and Florence (Phipps) Jones in Oxford, England.
In 1954 when Laura was 16 years old, her mum put her on the ship, Queen Elizabeth, and sent her to America. She lived with her aunt and uncle for two years in Manistee. While she was there, they sent her to Manistee High School as a way to meet people and make friends her own age. It was there that Laura first met Bill Stubbs.
When Laura was 18, she moved to Grand Rapids to live and work. It was there that she became reacquainted with Bill and they began dating. On March 28, 1959, Laura and Bill got married.
In 1963, Laura and Bill and their young son, Jess, moved to Ludington for Bill’s job. Ludington became their forever home. The next year a second son, David, was born and five years later sister Sara came along.
Laura loved and was very proud of her cute little English inspired home on Rath Avenue. She filled her home with wonderful antiques and thoughtful treasures and she enjoyed crafting. Her knack for gardening was very evident in her well-maintained yard. In the spring and summer her plants and flowers were magnificent, but it was her gorgeous window boxes that were showstoppers.
Laura’s spirit can be defined by her fierce love for her family and friends. She loved music, especially Elvis Presley, show tunes, and the musicals “Les Misérables” and “The Sound of Music.” She was also an enthusiastic sports fan; Go Pistons! Laura was a wonderful cook and loved making her English recipes, like sausage rolls, and teaching them to her family. She also loved the Ludington beach.
Laura worked for many years at Lakeview Elementary School. She was fondly known as the “Lunch Lady.” Students and staff loved her infectious laugh; her enjoyment working with kids was always evident.
Laura is survived by her sons William Jess Stubbs and David (Anita) Stubbs; her brother Ken (Val) Jones of Oxford, England; her sister-in-law Sandy Eisele; eight grandchildren Jennifer, Ian and Evan Stubbs; Daniel (Heather) Shoup. Cody (Amber) Fink, Callie (Joe) Roberts, Adam (Deana) Purple, and Kerri (Chris Wright; six great-grandchildren Delaney, McKenna and Taj Williams, Ezra Purple, Riley Acker and Katelyn Johnson; eight great great-grandchildren Victoria Fields, Silus and Simon Roberts, Finn Fink, Marvyn, Jameson, and Elizabeth Brault, and Adelyn Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bill Stubbs; her beloved daughter Sara Stubbs Perez; her sister-in-law Suzie Thomas; her brother-in-law Jack Stubbs; her mother and stepfather Morris and Florence Thomas, and her infant great-granddaughter Ada Joy Fink.
