SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central split its dual meet Wednesday, Jan. 7, losing to Holton 37-41 and defeating Hesperia 54-30.

“We really need to work on wrestling for every point to understand what it means to win a big dual,” said MCC Coach Kendel Trim. ” We knew we were going to have two tough matches tonight.  We came up short in one and big in the other.  We will win more matches if we can build that consistency but it is part of having a young team and they are starting to learn how to compete.”

Winning two matches on the night were seniors Landon Angst, 215 pounds, Parker Overmyer, 165, and David Letts, 144. Freshman Mason Maidens, 215/275, also had a win.

“Landon wrestled especially well tonight getting two pins on the night to help with very important bonus points,” Trim said.

Also winning two matches on the night were sophomores Wyatt Herwig, 126, and Desmond Thomas, 190.

“Wyatt looked really good and had two pretty dominant wins,” Trim said.

Junior William Wright had a win against Holton’s William Heavin by fall at 3:33.

“Will showed a lot of heart in this match,” Trim said. “He got in a couple of pretty bad spots, but he kept battling and came up with a win.”

Winning matches against Hesperia were junior Dameon Letts, 113; freshman Alexis Lathrop, 126; junior William Thomsen, 150; and junior Emmanuel Yeck, 175.

“We definitely had a lot of bright spots, but we need to continue to work,” Trim said. “We have a lot more we can do and it is going to take a lot of work to get there.”

MCC will compete at the Pine River Fallen Bucks tournament on Saturday.
