CUSTER — Mason County Eastern’s Varsity Boys Basketball team scored a win against the Brethren Bobcats Wednesday, Dec. 17, 64-60.

“We’ve been mostly competitive in our games this year and they haven’t been going our way down the stretch,” said MCE Varsity Coach Austin Boundy. “I’m really happy for these guys that they were able to close one out. My hope is that they carry this momentum into Mesick on Friday.

“There are a lot of guys to shout out after that game, but the two I have to go with are Josh Rogers and Kaiden Lague. Josh did an excellent job facilitating our and keeping his composure, which is huge. And for Kaiden to hit the game winning free throws down the stretch is huge. He’s got a real chance at being one of the best shooters in our league, he just needs to get some confidence and I think this was the game for it.”

MCE scorers:

  • Josh Rogers, 21
  • Milo Shoup, 19
  • Aaron Drake, 10
  • Kaiden Lague, 8
  • Afton Shoup, 4
  • Arik Verschueren, 2

Scores by the quarters:

  • MCE: 16, 16, 18, 14 = 64
  • BHS: 5, 18, 21, 16 = 60

JV lose to Bobcats 61-24

“We are continuing to improve in small steps,” said Cardinal junior varsity Coach Abe Shoup. “In the first half, Brethren’s offensive rebounding and second chance points hurt us. At halftime we put emphasis on boxing out and I felt we played much better in the third and fourth quarters. Eighth grader Hoyt Smith did a nice job of  finding openings and turning them into buckets. It’s good to see that starting to click in our younger and less experienced guys.”

MCE scorers:

  • Hoyt Smith, 13
  • Cruz Goble, 5
  • Tristan Johnson, 3
  • Tristin Cullen, 2
  • Kollin Spyker, 1

Scores by the quarters:

  • MCE: 4, 6, 7, 7 = 24
  • Brethren: 21, 19, 13, 8 = 61
